Beam Couplings

Ruland manufactured beam couplings have high angular misalignment capabilities, are zero-backlash and have a balanced design for reduced vibration at speeds up to 6,000 RPM. They are manufactured from a single piece of aluminum or stainless steel with multiple sets of spiral cuts to provide higher stiffness and better all-around misalignment capabilities than traditional single beam couplings. Ruland beam couplings are available in inch, metric, and inch to metric bore sizes ranging from 3/32" to 3/4" and 3mm to 20mm. they are commonly used in encoder, tachometer, and light duty power transmission applications where precise motion control is desired.

Bellows Couplings

Ruland manufactured bellows couplings have high torque and torsional stiffness capabilities, are zero-backlash, have a balanced design, and can accommodate all forms of misalignment. They are comprised of two anodized aluminum hubs and a stainless steel bellows, making a lightweight, low inertia coupling capable of speeds up to 10,000 RPM. The thin wall of the stainless steel bellows can easily flex while remaining rigid under torsional loads. Ruland carefully manufactures clamp style bellows coupling hubs with or without keyways with inch, metric, and inch-to-metric bores ranging from 1/8" to 1 3/4" and 3mm to 45mm. They are commonly used in high-performance stepper servo systems where precise motion control is required.

Controlflex Couplings

Ruland Controlflex couplings are a three-piece assembly with a balanced design comprised of two hubs joined to one or two center inserts called frogs. This design creates a lightweight low inertia flexible coupling capable of speeds up to 25,000 RPM. Clamp style hubs are manufactured with inch, metric, keyed, and keyless bores ranging from 1/8” to 1-1/2” and 3mm to 40mm for high customizability. The unique design of the frog concentrates forces onto its flexible limbs allowing for low bearing loads protecting sensitive small bearings in applications such as encoders or tachometers. Controlflex couplings are also electrically isolating since the hubs do not touch and frogs are made from acetal. They are manufactured by Schmidt-Kupplung in Germany and are RoHS3 compliant.

Disc Couplings

Ruland manufactured disc couplings have high torque and torsional stiffness capabilities, are zero-backlash, have a balanced design, and can accommodate all forms of misalignment. They are manufactured in single disc styles for compact installations and double disc styles for higher misalignment capabilities. Ruland disc couplings are comprised of two anodized aluminum hubs, stainless steel disc springs, and a center spacer (double disc only) creating a lightweight low inertia coupling capable of speeds up to 10,000 RPM. Hubs are manufactured with or without keyways in clamp and set screw styles with bore sizes ranging from 1/8" to 1-1/4" and 3mm to 32mm. They are commonly used in high performance stepper servo systems where precise motion control is required.

Jaw Couplings

Ruland manufactured zero-backlash jaw couplings have a highly customizable three-piece design, have high dampening capabilities, and can accommodate all forms of misalignment. The two aluminum hubs press fit onto an elastomeric center spacer called "the spider" allowing for consistent zero-backlash operation. Ruland zero-backlash jaw couplings have a balanced design for reduced vibration at speeds up to 8,000 RPM. Hubs are manufactured with or without keyways in clamp or set screw types with bore sizes ranging from 1/8" to 1-1/4" and 3mm to 32mm. Spiders are available in three durometers allowing the user to match coupling performance with system requirements. Zero-backlash jaw couplings are commonly used in applications with high acceleration/deceleration curves where dampening and precise motion control are required.

Oldham Couplings

Ruland manufactured oldham couplings have a highly customizable three-piece design, are zero-backlash, and have high parallel misalignment capabilities. Two anodized aluminum hubs press fit into the mating slots of the center disk allowing for zero-backlash operation and low bearing loads. Ruland oldham couplings have a balanced design for reduced vibration at speeds up to 4,500 RPM. Hubs are manufactured with or without keyways in clamp or set screw types with bore sizes ranging from 1/8" to 1-1/4" and 3mm to 30mm. Disks are available in three materials allowing the user to match coupling performance with system requirements. They are commonly used in stepper servo systems that require a high parallel misalignment coupling.

Slit Couplings

Ruland slit couplings are manufactured from a single piece of 7075 aluminum with a patented slit design for smooth transition of motion, consistent zero-backlash operation, and low bearing loads. The radiused edges of the slit pattern reduce stress on the coupling allowing for high torsional stiffness and accommodation of all misalignment types. This design creates a well-balanced coupling with misalignment similar to an aluminum beam coupling, torque similar to a single disc coupling, and torsional stiffness similar to a stainless steel beam coupling. Designers can reliably use slit couplings in high performance motor to ball screw or gearbox applications in industries such as medical, semiconductor, solar, and test and measurement. Ruland offers two styles of slit coupling. The RL-series features a longer body which allows for greater torsional stiffness and misalignment accommodation. The RS-series has a shorter body for increased speed and better fit in compact installations. Slit couplings are available with clamp or set screw attachments. Set screw styles offer higher RPM capabilities (up to 70,000 RPM) and micro-bore sizes starting at 1.5mm. Slit couplings are manufactured by Reliance Precision Ltd., in their Cork, Ireland factory and are RoHS3 and REACH compliant. Ruland stocks and bores to size slit couplings in bore sizes ranging from 1.5mm to 12mm or 1/8” to 3/8”.
