What are One-Piece Shaft Collars?

Release Date: November 30, 2018

One-piece shaft collars wrap around the shaft for even distribution of clamping forces. Clamp collars are easy to remove, indefinitely adjustable, and work well on virtually any shaft. Ruland uses carefully selected materials and proprietary processes on its one-piece collars to ensure the clamping gap remains open for simpler and more precise adjustment, installation and fit.

Transcript

Hi Bobby Watkins and in this segment were going to talk about one-piece clamp type shaft collars, again single piece construction, one clamp screw, on the smaller sizes there is a back cut which helps to improve holding power, by allowing this side to close more easily. It has much higher holding power then a set screw type collar, big advantage over set screw type collar on holding power. Also, because it wraps around the shaft squeezes on it does not mar the shaft so for repeated service in the field you don’t have shaft damage with this design. Single point face this is your precision referenced face, .002” (0.05mm) TIR accuracy so you want to use this face when you put it up against whatever you trying to fixture into place to keep perpendicularity. One of the drawbacks of the single piece design they don’t have quite the holding power of the two-piece design with two clamp screws a little bit reduce holding power vs the two-piece. Also you can’t service “in place” for example if I wanted to put a collar here, if I used a one piece design I would have to dissemble everything slide collar up from the end and install whereas on the two piece design I can come around the shaft and service “in place” without having to go through a big disassembly process and again big advantages over set screws type collars.
