What Is A Keyway?

Release Date: April 15, 2019

For some it's an indispensable component feature. Others may need to ask, "what is a keyway?"

Question: What is a keyway?
Answer:A keyway is used to prevent components from slipping on a shaft and add torque capacity in driven systems. When rigid couplings are used without a keyway, torque is determined by the holding power of the screws. When the clamping force is overcome the coupling will slip on the shaft. If a key is added to the shaft and a keyway is added to the coupling it will increase torque capacity to the sheer of the key.
