What Is The Maximum Size Jaw Coupling You Can Make With A Keyway?

Release Date: March 4, 2019

Keyways are a common feature in jaw couplings. In this video you'll learn about Ruland's experiences manufacturing larger jaw couplings with keyways and the potential drawbacks to doing so.

Question: Do you make a jaw coupling that will work with 32mm and 14mm keyed shafts?
Answer: When talking to the user it was determined that this was a single direction, high torque pump application. Not at all a fit for a beam coupling which is probably why it originally failed. Unfortunately, we do not make a 32mm jaw coupling hub with keyway. It requires us to move the key location, which is a special. We have also had customer break hubs as there is not enough material between the key and the hub tenon or the key and the OD. This compromises the structural integrity of the coupling and has led to failures in the field. This application is generally not a great fit for a zero-backlash jaw coupling. For a single direction, non-precision pump application such as this one the user is better of with a straight jaw coupling.
