Solutions from Ruland: Oldham Couplings for Encoder Feedback Systems

asndsa

Ruland has the right oldham coupling for any encoder due to the three-piece design.

Ruland oldham couplings are flexible and accurate, making them ideal for encoder feedback systems. Oldham couplings operate with zero-backlash and can accommodate large amounts of parallel misalignment with low bearing loads.

Oldham couplings are available with bore sizes ranging from 1/8” (3mm) to 1-1/8” (30mm).
Why Ruland Oldham Couplings?

  • Accommodate high amounts of parallel misalignment with low bearing loads for increased encoder performance.
  • Reduced vibration at up to 4,500 RPM due to a balanced design.
  • Tailor coupling performance to encoder needs with three disk options to choose from.
  • Longest service life in the industry because of Ruland's proprietary hub machining process.
  • RoHS3, REACH, and Conflict Minerals compliant.
  • Carefully made in our Marlborough, Massachusetts advanced manufacturing facility and available for immediate delivery.

are a three-piece design comprised of mated to a center disk. This makes it easy to combine larger motor output shafts with smaller shafts typically found on encoders. Ruland offers over from off-the-shelf parts with clamp or set screw hubs with inch, metric, keyed, and keyless bores mated to . Ruland uses a proprietary hub machining process that allows for smooth interaction between the hub and disk for the longest life in the industry.

Oldham couplings operate with zero-backlash and high stiffness when acetal or PEEK disks are used, making them suitable for encoders that require precise positioning. They can accommodate all forms of misalignment, however they are most effective in applications with high parallel misalignment which is common in encoder feedback systems. The only resistance on the disk is frictional, resulting in low bearing loads even at high misalignment. This helps protect delicate encoder components such as bearings. Oldham couplings have the added benefit of electrical isolation due to the non-conductive nature of the disk, which prevents electrical currents from being passed to the encoder, causing inaccurate data readings or damage.

Oldham couplings are available in bore sizes from 1/8” to 1-1/8” or 3mm to 30mm. Disks with through holes, d-bores, custom dimensions, and other engineered solutions are available by request. Oldham couplings are made from meticulously selected bar stock from North American mills and carefully manufactured in our advanced manufacturing facility in Massachusetts. Hardware is all metric and performs above industry standards for maximum clamping capabilities.
